It was a gruesome day at Lake Perris, but I was able to lock onto some bass fishing patterns on the old town kayak with a few baits. First off, it was over 100 degrees with water temps at 78-81 and clarity was 10-15 feet. I predicted the winning length at Lake Perris to be in the high 70s or low 80s inches. Anglers will have a tough time catching a decent limit if a limit at all with the current conditions, but there are windows of opportunity if executed right.

The best bait I found in the tackle box was a Jackall iprop 75s in ghost minnow which is a spybait. It's almost a do nothing bait. Cast it on 8lb to 10lb fluorocarbon leader to 20lb braid backing. Use a spinning rod (linked below) in a medium action and cast it as far as you can and retrieve slowly. I use this technique when bait is prevalent and when it's scorching and slow. Lost a biggin around 4-5lbs early in the morning under bait balls of threadfin shad. Stick with natural colors with this spybait. Another alternative is the Duo Realis spybait.

Second bait in my arsenal would be a 1/4 to 1/2 ounce jig either in a PB&J or green pumpkin color because of 10-15 feet water clarity. You can go with a darker jig for a bigger bite if it's 1-10 ft. visibility. It was my first time trying out the Keitech tungsten jigs but I like it. The jig head looks weird as heck but it works. I get more sensitive with the tungsten. With the jig, you don't get many bites but you get the right ones most of the time. This month alone it caught 20.5, 19, and 18 inch bass during 100 degree weather, but I only caught 1-3 fish on it. The technique I used was pitching. I wasn't pitching it in grass and mattes, but the greenish looking trees in 16 to 22 feet of water.

Last of all, I fished the Cool Baits 3/8 ounce underspin. Fished it over nasty brush and trees and was able to get some in dead calm waters. Every 10-15 minutes there would be bass busting and I would get bit by throwing into the school. But when that didn't happen, I would catch bass by stick my rod into the water or very low to the water and winding slowing ticking the top of trees in deeper water. For example, I would cast down a tree line in 20 feet of water but fishing in the 10 ft. water column to bring it across suspending bass. The thermocline during the summer changes and could be up to 10ft. in the water column depending on oxygen levels causing bass to suspend in deeper waters.
